CCTV News: The First Better Design Award Ceremony Held in Shenzhen

On December 27, the 2024 Better Design Award Ceremony was held in Shenzhen. The event was jointly hosted by China Media Group Guangdong Headquarters and Shenzhen Industrial Design Profession Association. Hu Jinjun, Deputy Director of China Media Group, and Wang Sheng, Vice Governor of Guangdong Province, attended the event and delivered speeches. Academician Zhang Yun and Kang Hongpu from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Guo Mingyi, Vice President of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, were also present.

In his speech, Hu Jinjun stated that the Better Design Award is an innovative initiative to thoroughly implement President Xi Jinping’s "Made in China" strategy and enhance China’s voice in industrial design. The competition focuses on key sectors such as national key projects and strategic industries, aiming to establish an industrial design evaluation system with Chinese discourse, contribute Chinese design wisdom to the global advanced manufacturing industry, and promote Chinese industrial culture. The competition fully highlights the "gold content" of Guangdong and the Greater Bay Area’s high-quality manufacturing development. It is a concrete embodiment of the deepened cooperation between China Media Group and Guangdong Province. During the preparation process, China Media Group leveraged its unique advantages in creativity, visual representation, and international communication, focusing on the Bay Area, with a nationwide and global reach. Through refined visual expression, it showcased the shining moments of "Chinese Design" and helped promote Guangdong as a strong manufacturing province and the Greater Bay Area as a hub for the international design industry. The competition continuously explores the path towards "Better" and "Better and Better."

In his speech, Wang Sheng stated that hosting the Better Design Award is a specific action to thoroughly implement President Xi Jinping’s important remarks on technological innovation and the modernization of industrial systems. It is a key measure in adhering to the principle of a real economy, with manufacturing at its core, and accelerating the development of new productive forces. Guangdong is a major manufacturing and design province, with many new designs and products in fields such as new energy vehicles and drones originating from Guangdong, becoming global trends and leading the industry. With strong support from China Media Group, this year's competition has built a platform for discovering good designs, transforming them into quality products, and creating excellent brands, making a positive contribution to facilitating exchanges and mutual learning of outstanding innovative designs both domestically and globally. Guangdong will take this opportunity to further optimize its industrial design ecosystem and hopes that businesses and designers will continue to lead industrial development with new ideas and designs, contributing more wisdom and strength to the transformation of "Made in Guangdong" to "Created in Guangdong."

The Better Design Award was launched on May 21, 2024, with 7,183 design entries from 52 countries and regions around the world.

During the award ceremony, nine winning designs were announced, including the Design Pioneer Awards, Gold Awards, and Grand Awards. The Gold Award winners included the INTROPY SPEEDSTER Aero Road Bike, FireFly Multifunctional Modular Fixed-Wing UAV, IFLYTEK Translator 4.0, Loop bench, and Resona A20 ultra-high-end ultrasound diagnostic system. The Design Pioneer Awards were given to the conceptual designs of uMetaCareLink - Visualized Service System for Doctor-Patient Communication and the TOK-ARM. The BDA Grand Award went to the large-scale roadway full section mining machine TBM, and the 2030 manned lunar rover got the Concept Grand Award.

The first Better Design Award Ceremony will be broadcast in January 2025 on CCTV-2's Finance Channel and simultaneously on CCTV' s online platforms.

The event was attended by Cui Shutian, First-Level Inspector of the Industry Policy and Regulations Department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology; Srini Srinivasan, Former President of the World Design Organization and Recommendation Officer of BDA; He Renke, Professor at Hunan University and Juror President of BDA; officials from China Media Group, Guangdong Province, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and related government departments; representatives from central news media outlets based in Guangdong, as well as some universities, companies, and industry associations.
